St. Patrick's Day

Saint Patricks Day is most often celebrated with the most flair for people with Irish backgrounds; however a lot of the population will take this day as an excuse to join a party and drink.  In towns that are highly populated with Irish people, such as Boston, Massachusetts, the people who celebrate do so with much enthusiasm. It has become customary to drink beer which has been made to be green with food dye.

Parades are also held and many people congregate inside bars.  There is a saying that states, “Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day.”  This holiday first originated in Ireland, to celebrate St. Patrick.  The person who was to become a saint was born in the city of Wales in the year 385 AD. His name was Maewyn and he did not have an extensive educates. When he was sixteen years old, he was sold into slavery by Irish marauders that raided the village that he lived in.

While in captivity as a slave, he stated that he became very close to God.  After six years, he escaped and made his way to the city of Gaul and studied the word of God for twelve years. Later, he was named a second bishop to Ireland. Arrested many times for his attempts to coverts people to Christianity, he escaped each time. His attempts lasted for thirty years and he died in the year of 461 AD.  After he died, he was named a saint, and this holiday was created.
